PUBLIC SCHOOLS
OF THE TARRYTOWNS
The Public Schools of the Tarrytown serve a richly
diverse student population in the communities of Tarrytown and Sleepy
Hollow. This progressive school district takes pride in offering
a wide range of conventional and innovative educational programs
extending from pre-school services through Advanced Placement and
college courses. The grade level arrangement follows the Princeton
Plan, under which all of the students at a given grade level attend
the same school. This allows the district to cluster its resources
efrficiently and organize its schools based on the developmental
needs of children at different age levels. All students benefit
from access to the latest computer technology in their classrooms
that increasingly includes opportunities such as the use of laptop
computers with wireless connections to the Internet.
A pre-kindergarten program housed
in the kindergarten building serves approximately 30% of the pre-school
population. Teaching Assistants are assigned to the kindergarten
and first grade classes, which have an average enrollment of 20
children. Class size guidelines for grades 2 - 6 call for 22 to
23 students per classroom. The core academic curriculum is carefully
aligned with state standards and the district has been among the
first in the region to begin using sophisticated curriculum mapping
software as a tool in promoting consistency. Reading, math and enrichment
specialists are available to support both struggling and advanced
students. Consulting teachers work in general education classrooms
at each grade level to provide services for English Language Learners
and students with special education needs. A strong arts program
is offered from the earliest grades and students have an opportunity
to get involved in band, orchestra or chorus beginning in the 4th
grade. An elementary Spanish program and a dual language program
have been implemented at the primary grade levels and will eventually
extend to the 5th grade level.
At secondary level, students have
a wide range of course options within each department. The standard
Regents curriculum is designed to prepare all students to meet New
York state high school graduation requirements, which include passing
five state exams. Advanced students have the opportunity to take
honors courses and to pursue an accelerated sequence allowing access
to a large selection of Advanced Placement courses. A high percentage
of the student body is involved in the many extra-curricular clubs,
performing arts and sports programs that are offered. Almost all
of the district's graduates go on to college and top students are
routinely accepted at the nation's most competitive colleges and
universities.
